Hoen Nishibata, a calligraphy artist, described the appeal of calligraphy as follows. “Rub down the Usuzumi (light Chinese ink stick) and add water in it then, purple color stands out. When I drop it on the paper, the blur spreads out… I pull the spot of the ink and place on the paper… How interesting the Usuzumi is! Those process make me fascinated by the calligraphy work.”
Originally, she intended to write “Readable modern calligraphy” based on classics and has been carrying out her original intention until now. But there have been some changes recently. For many years, she has been teaching teachers and children “enjoyable calligraphy” for bringing about changes in boring calligraphy education in public schools. The attempt stimulated her playfulness in calligraphy.
She has held collaborative exhibitions with pictures and exhibitions on the theme of night junior high school students’ compositions, and also has worked on solo exhibitions for Afghanistan and Fukushima Charity Exhibition in Osaka, Tokyo, Hagi, Yamaguchi, Kobe, and other places. The theme adopted at the Fukushima Charity Exhibition was brought to the Paris Solo Exhibition held the following year, partly due to the momentum of participation in the Japan Expo Paris previous year. In addition, she has worked on many title bars of civic meetings in her local Osaka.
